SOUTHERN CROSS PET INSURANCE

For Alphero’s 2018 Design Day, Our team, George, consisting of Ryan Walker, Tulsi Wallace and I, were tasked with redesigning Southern Cross Pet Insurance with the goal of increasing their current customer base, by educating existing and prospective pet owners about the risks associated with pets throughout their lifetime.
The Problem
We discovered from our primary and secondary research that the overlying problem was that pet owners find dealing with pet insurance in New Zealand overwhelming and confusing.
When we assessed how Southern Cross and other pet insurance companies were offering their pet insurance policies online, we found a common theme, that it was very difficult to comprehend and understand which resulted in the process being tiresome and from interviews a leading reason why people had not gone through with getting pet insurance.
The Solution

To show how this could be done, we redesigned the application and quote process for pet insurance to become tailored to the animal’s microchip. This allowed for us to make the process feel less generic whilst offering a personalised journey that helped educate the user on what to expect in terms of their pets health and transparency on the cost of proposed insurance policies.
My Role and Takeaways
As this was only a 1 day event, our roles crossed over lots, however we managed to share the work well doing little bits of everything. We all contributed to ideation, research, insight analysis, prototyping and testing. My biggest takeaway from the event was our process of breaking down the problem and tensions of our target audience as efficiently as possible and prioritising our MVP. Our feedback was positive, with a huge emphasis on the amount of research conducted and the application of this research within our product. This helped us the a lot on the day and resulted in our team taking out 3rd place.
